It works
My uncle in Georgia has one of these, and I live in Michigan. When I first heard of Magic Jack it intrigued me that he was only paying $19.95 a year for phone service. So I had to check it out. So I went to the web site, and I did a lot of reading. After talking it over with my wife, we decided to try it out. It only took a couple of days to get it, and set up was easy, but when I plugged a phone in it to make a call, it was horrible. Though I remember reading some where that a power USB hub could fix this problem. So I order one up, and waited. Once it arrived, I hooked everything up to my computer, and started making calls. It worked great! Every time, with every call. I have been running it for a week, and no problems. In my personal option, no digital phone service will ever sound like a regular phone line. I know people the have Vonage, and Packet8, and this works just as great as those, maybe even better. I also have slowest DSL possible (768k), and sounded great, even when I...

Product Description

Add magicJack Telephone Adapter to your PC and you can make telephone calls within the USA and Canada for FREE! Skype uses a peer-to-peer network, whereas magicJack uses a dedicated telephone networkOther VoIP carriers do not have dedicated telephone networks, and lease this service from other companies. That means higher costs and poorer reliability. magicJack uses its own dedicated telephone network. You can use magicJack with either a regular telephone handset, or with a headset. You can also use both, and switch between the two. You can move magicJack between Internet providers. You can use magicJack from anywhere in the world (where broadband web access is available). It requires - PC - Windows XP or Vista operating system; (Mac/Apple expected soon); Broadband, high-speed internet, cable internet, DSL - WiFi - WiMax magicJack comes with an easy-to-use device to allow you to use a regular telephone handset. Service is free for 1st year. $20 per year thereafter. Top to learn more

Works great for me but it is not for everyone
The key to using Magicjack without any problems is to research information on it first to decide whether it's right for you *and* whether it will work for you. It's not really as easy as 1-2-3 nor will it work magically despite its name. You need to exceed its miminum system requirements, have high speed internet service (like cable), and YES, your PC has to be on with your internet connection available for Magicjack to work. But for $20 a year (initially cost is $39.95 for the Magicjack with 1 year phone service), to me, Magicjack is a great product which provides free unlimited long distance across the country and local phone service. However, Magicjack should not be your only phone service because if your electricity or internet connection goes out, Magicjack won't work. At least also have use of a cell phone service.I bought my Magicjack from its website [...] and received it in less than a week after I ordered it. If you want the option of returning it easily should...

An excellent choice and dirt cheap ...if...
I have been using MJ for a while and here are a few things to consider.1)Magic jack is not a standalone device.2)It needs a Windows or Mac based computer to operate.3)Needs a high speed internet connection..Will not work on dial up.4)Computer needs to be on to be able to use MJ..No sleep, hibernate or standby.5)Needs to be directly connected to the USB port on the PC and not a hub. The primary reason for this..in layman's terms is : The device draws power from the USB. In a distributed setting like a hub, there may not be enough power to support the device. Not saying it will not not work but you WILL have issues.Installation : Just plug the device on a available usb port and the software and drivers install automatically. Once installed, you will see the MJ softphone on your desktop. Now quickly go to the MJ website and do an upgrade. Steps are pretty simple.Firewall Settings: Add UDP port 5060 and 5070 to the windows...

Comprehensive MagicJack Plus Review
I have been using MagicJack Plus for over a month, and I am very impressed so far. I had a lot of questions about this device, and I will try to answer those questions for others who are interested in saving money on their phone service. Here are my answers based on my experience.Does it work? It really works. After you register by plugging it into your computer USB port, you just plug in your router, power, and phone. How is the sound quality? It is about half way between a cell phone and a regular land line. Sometimes I briefly hear some low volume static after talking, and some people say my voice sounds slightly synthesized. There is also a slight delay. How many phones can it support? I activated the phone wiring in my house and plugged in 3 cordless phones, and they all worked. If you do this, be sure to disconnect the phone wire that comes in from the phone company. Cordless phones provide their own power, so they are not much of a drain on the...

Way Better than original Magic Jack
I have been a MagicJack user for the past 3 years using the Origanal MagicJack and have been mostly happy with the service considering the annual savings. The call quality was usually pretty good, but at times it would stutter like crazy if someone else in the household was searching or downloading from the internet. With the computer being on 24/7 it would occasionally lockup or restart because of an update and the MagicJack at times wouldn't reconnect automatically. None being huge issues but would happen somewhat frequently it seemed.I decided to splurge and purchase the new MagicJack Plus recently. Setup was eazy. I set it up to use my existing magicjack phone number, then use it as a stand-alone unit (without it being connected to a computer) plugged directly into the wall. The call quality is far better than the original! I have had NO issues so far (several weeks) with stuttering calls due to others using the internet while I am talking on the telephone ,and...

Works Just Like a Landline
I used the original Magicjack for two years and the call quality could be sub-par at times. Often the PC needed to be rebooted so the quality was "acceptable." I was going to buy NetTalk Duo to replace my original MagicJack, but NetTalk doesn't port your phone number, so I waited for Magicjack Plus. The set-up of Magicjack Plus was relatively easy and took about 1/2 hour. After connecting the magicJack Plus, I immediately had a dialtone, but I was given a new phone number. I went online and chatted with a magicJack rep. who was extremely helpful and explained that I needed to log into my Magicjack account and click on a setting which I think was "use my current phone number" (or something like that). The Magicjack Plus works just like a landline and the call quality is mostly excellent, tho occasionally it sounds tinny, probably due to high traffic on the Web or high consumption of bandwidth. I was pleasantly surprised when the voicemail indicator on my phone system flashed when I...

So far, so good
I don't have a house phone at all due to the expense and we don't miss it at all! However, when my parents came to visit (who do not own cell phones), I did not want to leave them in the house with no telephone alone. So I purchased a Magic Jack Plus.It was very easy to set up -- plugged it into my laptop running WinXP and it was very self explanatory from there. Within 10 - 15 minutes, I had my magic jack set up, I had my phone number, and I was ready to go.The magic jack PLUS plugs directly into the internet router (cable is provided) and you must plug it into a power outlet for power (an adapter is provided in the package). You do, however, need a computer to set it up for the first time and get your phone number. So far the magic jack plus has been working great. I've only had it for 3 days, however. If anything changes I will report back!

good for limited use
I've made a big effort for more than a year to love my Magic Jack, but now I'm giving up on it as anything but a tool for occasional use. It works very well for some things, and not others. We tried to use it as a substitute for an AT&T land line. Our main phone number is a Google Voice number (We've moved four times in five years, so having a Google Voice number that never changes is convenient.) People call the GV number, which forwards to the MJ, and also to any other phones we want it to ring, including our cell phones. The system works for us about 80% of the time. But sometimes it's an awful hassle.Pros:- cheap, small, sturdy- decent voice quality with moderate broadband (lousy quality if you don't have the speed)- local number that you can call from anywhere (I use it overseas to call N.Am. numbers).Cons:- Computer has to be on for MJ to work. This is a huge disadvantage. We turn things off at night, and are...

Horrible Customer Service
This is a good product for the price, but the customer service is horrible. You cannot get a live person to answer a question. They claim to have live chat but the button does not connect you to anyone. It is really difficult to find "My Subscription" on their website. I have been sitting here for an hour this morning simply trying to figure out if I can get another number and renew my subscription. I am renewing until I can find a similar product that is just as cheap. There is also no way to give the company feedback on their customer service. If there was simply a contact form on their website, I would not have posted this review.

Excellent Product
I configured the OBi110 to use Google Voice, and it completely replaced my home telephone service. With free long distance within the US, the device will pay for itself in savings in a couple of months.Configuring the device was easy. The online documentation was decent, and I found a few other blogs with tutorials as well. I recommend using the obitalk web site for ease of configuration. The only problem is that it stores your Gmail username and password, so there's a certain expectation of trust that OBi will not misuse that information. Personally, I created a second Gmail / Google Voice account just for this product. Thanks Google!Note: this product does NOT provide access to 911. If this is needed, it is available through several Internet phone service providers. I used CallCentric, which provides enhanced 911 for $1.50 per month. The OBi online wizard provides easy setup for CallCentric and other Internet phone services, and configuring the...

Simple setup with Google Voice
I have been looking for a simple solution that would allow us to setup and use Google Voice. Since asterisk 1.8 came out, I have been waiting for DD-WRT or tomatoes to integrate this in the router so I would not need a computer to run 24/7 to set up Google Voice. Then comes Obi110 which solves this problem. The setup was very simple. If you don't want to store your GV credentials on the Obitalk.com you can set it up by logging on the adapter (just like logging onto the router). I did find it that if you do it this way, when you dial out you still have to dial "**1" (using profile1) then the number you want to reach. Maybe there is a way to get rid of this. But if you setup through Obitalk you can enable the prefix and dial just like in GV. You can also update the FW from Obitalk.Everything is working as expected. Caller ID shows up correctly when you call someone. When someone calls the ID would show "+" then the number with no dash, something like this:...

Awesome, Simply Awesome
I am usually not one to review a product, but I had to for this one. It is simply awesome. It was a simple plug and play installation for me, and you can't beat the price. I was on a local voip company before and this little unit outperforms there service for 1/10 the price. $30 a year can't be beat for the features. One thing to keep in mind is to visit their forums. They have a list of routers that works well with this unit and a list of those that don't. Do research first, and you shouldn't have any issues.

Great Product - I just purchased another,
I'm a leading engineer in the communications industry and found Nettalk to be the best US based VOIP provider. I have experience in and setting up and using Vonage, Pack8 along with multiple VOIP providers.I purchased Nettalk over 3 months ago and used it for 2 months in the US and now a month in Australia at my second home. The cost of the hardware is exactly where it should be priced. It is small, compact and very easy to tuck away somewhere. The call quality over a cable modem in the US or DSL modem in Australia didn't vary. The quality is slightly better than that of a mobile phone. Some people find that using 10 digit dialing is a problem. I didn't find it an issue. In most larger cities within the US with 2 or more area codes you need to use 10 digit dialing. Nettalk is simple and easy to use with no need for a computer to constantly run like MJ. The hareware is very inexpensive unlike ooma. The unit will run anywhere from 110-240V. It was very easy to setup letting me...

Good service/Great Price
I decided to go all in with the NetTalk DUO. I was tired of paying outrages landline bills. I really like the fact that you can plug it directly into a router. I wouldn't want to keep a computer on all the time just to receive phone call like you'd have to do with a MagicJack.Once I got the DUO hooked up to our router and registered the device with NetTalk, everything has been satisfactory. There has been an occasional glitch, but for the price you pay, I will deal with it. Glitches: (1) incoming calls don't always connect properly...the caller can't hear the receiver answer. The second try seems to always work properly. (2) some times there is latency during a call...but this is not as bad as some cell phone calls I've had.My wife doesn't like the fact that you have to dial all 11 digits to make a call. Someone else has mentioned this in a review...I say, really, how hard is it to enter in 4 extra digits? In larger cities, you're dialing 10 digits anyway.I...
